When I was in college, I suffered a severe attack of intrusive thought-related OCD. It was so intense that I had to temporarily drop out of school. Later that year, in gracious answer to the prayers of family and friends, God healed me of OCD. He did it entirely through His Word! Whenever it has tried to come back, I simply meditate on the scriptural truths that God opened my eyes to see, appeal to God to renew my mind, and it goes away. I have walked in victory over OCD for over 35 years as a result.

Later, I wrote an article sharing the Biblical truths that God used to heal me of OCD, entitled Help For Christians Who Have Difficulty Controlling their Thoughts. I regularly receive emails from people telling me how the article has helped them. But others write asking for more help, and I have been providing pastoral counseling free of charge by email and phone for many years. My time for phone counseling was limited, however, because of a full time job, ministry, and family.

Most of men endure tough battles when it comes to sexual temptation. Why is this? First of all, God gave a strong sex drive to most men. Secondly, we inherited sinful tendencies from our parents Adam and Eve, because we were “in” them when they sinned. We can be tempted by our own sinful nature even without Satan or his minions tempting us. But they tempt us, too.

Not only that, but more women are dressing immodestly and provocatively these days, and we are constantly being bombarded by images of such women on billboards, magazine ads, TV shows, movies, and commercials. And let’s not forget the internet. Never in history has it been so easy for a man to give in to temptation and indulge his sexual desires - at the mere click of mouse button!

To top it all off, in today’s media and political atmosphere, it is more tempting than ever for men to channel their sex drive away from God’s intent (a wife in marriage), and towards other things - someone of the same sex, cross dressing, transsexuality, etc.

If you are caught up in persistent temptations and/or sins in any of these areas, I want to help. I am a guy, so I too have felt the pull of strong temptations, sometimes so intensely that I’ve had to beg God for His help to resist it. And yet, despite having the strong temptations all men face, with God’s help I have managed to escape slavery to sexual sin. And you need to escape it, too. Why? Because the Bible says,

”Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” -I Corinthians 6:9-10 (NIV)

If you cannot break away from sexual sin in your life or in your thoughts, then obviously there is some scriptural truth you have failed to understand or apply. I’d like to help you discern what that is, and explain to you how to be governed by the Spirit of God rather than your your sexual desires.

Many of the Biblical writers were not strangers to depression. For instance, one of the Psalmists wrote:

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” - Psalm 43:5 (NIV)

The Psalmist emerged from his depression by finding renewed hope in God. I’ve had a love of Christian Apologetics (the defense of the Christian faith) since I was a teenager, and have written two books providing sound and logical reasons to believe that God exists. These include bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit known as self-discipline, abiding in Christ, being led and empowered by the Holy Spirit, and permitting God’s mighty power to be at work through you.

I will help you to clarify your goal to be pure, sought out of the right motives, achieved in the right way, and in conformity to God’s will. Together we will break down the achievement of your goal into manageable action steps, set a timetable for achieving them, and set reasonable goalposts along the way. Then I will rejoice with you when you reach each one!

I will also encourage you to envision things that your future self will likely do that will sabotage those goals, and make plans to prevent your future self from doing that.

I will hold you accountable at each session, asking you to rate your progress towards your goal since the last session. If you have fallen short in your progress, I will help you to identify roadblocks, and together we will devise ways to circumvent them.
