How do we abide in Jesus, who is The Vine, so that we can bear much fruit? What an important question to ask! Knowing the answer to it will enable you to bear much fruit for God.
The simple answer to two additional questions provides us with the answer to this vital question.
What does a branch do to abide in the vine and bear fruit?
It simply allows the sap to flow in and out. Likewise, let the life of the Holy Spirit flow into you. Let Him do His work in you, bringing you to repentance, cleansing you of sin through the blood of Jesus, guiding you, refreshing you, comforting you, and empowering you to live for God.Who holds up the branch—the vine, or the branch?
Obviously, it is the vine who holds up the branch. Likewise, the work of abiding is primarily God's work. Your job is simply to allow God to perform his work in you and through you. As you do, much fruit will grow!
What is this fruit Jesus is speaking of? It is healthy fruit that is good both inside and out. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. This includes good deeds such as leading others to Christ, helping others grow in Christ, acts of kindness, righteousness, and meeting the needs of others.
Deeds performed without the Spirit will be bad inside, like an apple that looks good on the outside but is brown and distasteful on the inside.
Today and each day thereafter, may we resolve to abide in Jesus, and bear much good tasting fruit for Him!
